The Day of the African Child was celebrated on 15th June 2019. This year’s theme was “Humanitarian Action in Africa: Children’s Rights First”. In Garissa County, the event was held at Jamhuri Club, Garissa town.
The Ministry of Education, key state and non-state actors, county departments and schools participated in the colourful event. Top on the discussion agenda was children welfare where leaders called for support for the welfare of the children in terms of their right to education, health and social support among others. In his address, the NCPD representative, Mr Moses Ouma (County Population Officer, North Eastern Region) called for greater collaboration and increased funding for various population and development programmes. He stated the importance of education, environment and health in development.
Leaders agreed to form a Population Health Education and Environment (PHEE) working group to spearhead meaningful engagements and advocacy on PHEE issues in the county.
